A Glamorous Night of Awards for Mack Town

McKinleyville business owners and operators of nonprofit groups gathered at the Blue Lake Casino's Sapphire Palace on Friday, March 27 to celebrate the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce Member's Choice Award recipients as well as the Azalea Award Recipients.

The event was styled after the Academy Awards, with Sara Goodwin and Cassaundra Burrell acting as the evening's hostesses.

Guests to the event walked the red carpet, with the paparazzi taking their pictures as well as fans asking for their autographs.

There were video testimonials given by members for the award recipients.  Many volunteers worked together to make the event possible.

The goal of the chamber was to get as many members the the community engaged as possible.  The chamber reached out to the Arcata High School business clas as well as their Interact Group.  The chamber also worked with HSU's Leisure Programming class.

There was a silent auction before the program as well as a live auction afterward with Rex Bohn, First District supervisor, acting as auctioneer.
Chamber members nominated and voted for the Member's Choice Awards recipients.  This year's award recipients are:
·         New Business of the Year - The Fieldbrook General Store
·         Small Business of the Year - A & L Feed
·         Business of the Year - Six Rivers Brewery
·         Home Based Business of the Year - Orchids for the People

The Azalea Award was also presented during the program.  This year's recipients, Ross and Kelly Miller of Miller Farms Nursery, were nominated for the award by previous years' recipients.  Chamber President and CEO Heather Viña presented the award to the Millers.

The McKinleyville Chamber would like to thank everyone in the community for their support of the chamber and its members.  Many thanks to everyone for donating the many items that made the auction a success.

Lions Club Hosts Annual Winter Express

It’s the annual Winter Express Program put on by the eight member Lions Club plus a village of around 200 volunteers. It was a three day event that’s been running for the past eight years, giving kids an experience they aren’t necessarily used to.

“It gives the children the opportunity to shop without their parents present and when the child makes the choice to get a gift and the parent is not involved, it's just a totally different feeling for the kids,” Bainbridge said.

More than 700 kids had the opportunity to come down the aisles each getting to pick out four gifts for family or friends. If you do the math, that's nearly 3,000 items donated to the Lions Club for this year's Winter Express.

The items were provided by local businesses or purchased from grant money. After students shop, elves helped them wrap and tag the presents. Students also got a picture with Santa, someone who is in tune with the purpose of this program.
