McKinleyville Community Services District

McKinleyville Community Services District is an independent Special District empowered to provide McKinleyville residents with water, wastewater, parks, recreation, streetlighting, open space maintenance, and library services.

To provide these services, the District employs 29 full-time employees and approximately 35 part-time employees. These employees are responsible for ensuring that McKinleyville residents have safe, clean water; for ensuring sewage travels safely away from homes to get treated appropriately at the Wastewater Management Facility adjacent to Hiller Park; for ensuring there are a variety of opportunities for youth, adults and families to engage in healthy recreation and enrichment activities; for maintaining parks, open spaces and public facilities to ensure they are safe and accessible; for ensuring resident fees for services are used responsibly and efficiently with oversight and transparency.

MCSD is constantly working to make improvements to systems and infrastructure in service to rate payers. Current projects they are particularly proud of include:

The construction of a 4.5 million-gallon water tank that will ensure McKinleyville has an adequate water supply, even in times of emergency or disaster. This project is slated to be completed in November/December of this year. Additionally, the District has been awarded several grants that will ensure that upgrades to water delivery and sewage removal systems get done with as little fiscal impact to the District as possible.

The McKinleyville Community Forest development for public recreation.

The forest property was acquired and became open to the public in January of 2024. Since then, public access from Murray Rd. has been expanded and improved significantly; mountain bike trails have been developed and/or improved; hiking trails have been improved; a trail stewards program and regularly occurring workday have been established. The District knows there is much more to do and is working diligently to establish a long-term plan for development.

The BMX Track and Park development at School Rd. and Washington Ave. is particularly special as this will bring a park and amenities to a region of McKinleyville that is currently considered “park poor,” meaning residents on that side of McKinleyville do not live within a half-mile radius of a park. The District is very excited to bring more recreation amenities within walking distance of residences.
